Retraining Habitual Thoughts – Re-minding myself

I’m grateful for the little opportunities that life presents each day to see the inner workings of my mind. It’s often not a pretty sight, since I’m aware of habitual thoughts that are negative! Maybe, some retraining of habitual thoughts is needed.

I was about to go across the city to an appointment, on one of the shared city bicycles. I was feeling a bit low on energy, and the thought of peddling uphill sweating on a full stomach wasn’t that appealing, so I was looking at the App to see if there were any electric bikes.

2 left… then 1… as I finished my lunch hurriedly.

I decided it was pointless to worry about it at that moment and to surrender to whatever I found when I got there.

On the way to the bike station, I was imagining myself peddling uphill, getting all hot and bothered. It occurred to me that I was expecting and vividly visualising a negative outcome. Catching myself, I figured that I could envision another possibility, that of gliding more effortlessly on the electric bike, enjoying the view.

Minutes later at the station, however, I could only see normal bikes. I checked the other row. Only mechanical! Oh, well!

I attempted to cross back, but a guy was just coming in to park just where I was, so I told him to come through and went around.

As he got off, I saw that it was an electric! “Just what I was looking for!”, I said to him. He seemed to share in my joy. I got on and peddled off into the sunset, well, up the hill, actually.

A different future

Recounting now, it doesn’t feel like a big deal, but it did make me see what my mind habitually throws up in certain circumstances. It opened me up to the possibility of changing my internal imaginings and so also how I experience my outer world.

It seemed to start with witnessing my habitual mind, surrendering to things as they were, entertaining new possibilities, and trusting that things would work out as they needed to.

I imagined the possibility of a different reality, of retraining my habitual thoughts into a more positive vision of the future.

What if you could begin to see the reality you’re imagining with your current thought patterns and bring them into alignment with the future you want to create for yourself. Get in touch to explore the possibility of re-envisioning your future.
