Facing Uncertainty: Get to know your relationship with uncertainty

Seems like an old acquaintance that you’d long forgotten about has turned up to the party – Uncertainty. And she seems to have most people quaking in their boots. We really struggle with facing uncertainty in a healthy way.

How is it that we experience her so negatively? Does it have to be this way?

Perhaps now would be a good time to get intimate with Uncertainty.

Maybe I’ve got her all wrong. She’s female in my mind, but she can be any gender for you! At first meeting, I put her in a box labelled, “avoid at all costs!”. But if I got to know her a bit better, perhaps we could be friends… even best friends or lovers.

What’s your relationship with Uncertainty?

Is your approach to facing uncertainty healthy, or do you avoid her at all costs.

So far, after having spent some time with her in periods of my life, I know that the more comfortable I become hanging out in her company, the more creative and magical my life becomes.

For sure, it’s not comfortable resting in the not knowing. My mind throws up all sorts of scary stories into that space. However, when I remain still, open, well, that is exactly when I get inspiration with new ideas and paths for my life, that I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise.

It’s like the classic pie chart below, which categorises our knowing into 3 parts:

  1. What we know
  2. What we know we don’t know
  3. What we don’t know we don’t know

And guess what! Most of our creativity lies in the “What you don’t know you don’t know” segment!

So I’d suggest we get intimate with Uncertainty and see what she has to reveal to us. If you’re really stuck in a moment where you need inspiration on what to do next, you can check out my “What Now Process“.

I’ll be posting here about my on-going bid to get to know her. I wonder how you experience her? Let me know…
